“Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6, NKJV)

“Kids these days!” is a refrain as old as time. It is often muttered by someone who has been on this earth for at least forty or fifty years and believes that younger generations are somehow deficient in their behavior. It’s often followed by the phrase, “Back in my day…” And then the person goes on to espouse the virtues of their upbringing, decry the moral decay of society, and lament the future of the world. 

I think we all have misperceptions about both how we were raised and the world in which our children are being raised. That’s why it’s helpful to turn to actual survey data to understand how much society has changed over time. I think we all know that religion has declined
