The Burge Report: Are Non-Denominational Churches Just Southern Baptists in Disguise?

Episode #1041

Rainer on Leadership

In this episode, Ryan Burge and Sam explore the rise of non-denominational Christianity and ask a provocative question: are non-denoms essentially just Southern Baptists without the label? Drawing on recent survey data, this conversation examines how non-denominational Christians compare to America’s largest Christian traditions in age, racial diversity, church attendance, and views of the Bible. The trends suggest that non-denominational churches are not simply a rebranded version of older evangelical traditions. They may represent a significant part of the future of American Protestantism.

    • There are doctrinal similarities between non-denominational churches and the Southern Baptist Convention (e.g., baptism by immersion), but the demographics are beginning to look different.
    • Non-denominational Christians now make up about 30% of all Protestants, a dramatic rise from just 5% in 1972, when Southern Baptists were growing rapidly. Today, about 30% of Protestants are non-denominational. The growth of non-denoms may be attributed to transfer growth from Southern Baptist churches over the last few decades.
    • Non-denoms are younger on average than Southern Baptists, giving them a demographic advantage for the future.
    • They are more racially diverse than Southern Baptists, especially among younger adults.
    • In attendance and belief, non-denoms increasingly resemble the evangelical mainstream, with weekly attendance rates comparable to Southern Baptists and relatively high levels of biblical literalism.
